Interview to Chrisse Mcdonald and Nous Vous

Hello, My name is Lucy Gibson & I am a Leeds based 3rd year Graphic Design student at LCA. For part of my final major project i am designing a publication based on contemporary craft design. In partially how designers applied their 'hands on' practical skills to commercial briefs, the techniques and processes involved and the time it takes from the initial ideas to end productions. the final section of the book will contain details on set design. Looking at those who make there own props/sets by hand in three dimensions and then presenting it in 2D via the use of camera of computer.

I have huge admiration for your work and in how you apply the range of materials in your paper-craft when erecting sets - especially the use of photography. There is something very personal and individual about your style which would make your perspective interesting on my subject matter. If you could answer the following questions i would be very grateful:

1. What does 'craft design' mean to you as a designer?
2. Do you think there are certain elements which digital design cannot capture, which craft design can? Could it be argued that craft design has more value?
3. Do you think your style of craft design represents your personality?
4. What is your material of choice and if your could work with any material what would it be?
5. Before you start designing do you normally have a visualized idea of what the final outcome will look like?
6. How long does it usually take to finish one project from start to finish? What is the usual length of time you put aside for making the sets?
7. What is the size & scale in which you work on when building a set?
8. For the final production, do you work in a team? Or take the project from start to finish on your own?

Thank you for your time.
